Oakhurst Awards $3,900 to 4-H Winners At Maine & New Hampshire State Fairs

Portland, Maine (December 2, 2010) - Maine’s Oakhurst Dairy recognized the achievements of young dairy farmers in New England, awarding $3,900 in cash prizes this year to participants in 4-H Youth Development Programs at state fairs in New Hampshire and Maine.

The competition was open to youth in 4-H between the ages of 9 and 18 who entered dairy cows they have raised, cared for and groomed.  The winners each received $100 and a banner from Oakhurst.  Winners were chosen from 39 classes at 11 fairs in both states.

2010 is Oakhurst's sixth year supporting 4-H Youth Development Programs in Maine, and the fourth year in New Hampshire.  Oakhurst has contributed over $25,000 to 4-H efforts during this time.

“For years, 4-H has given future dairy farmers the hands-on experience they need to be successful,” said Oakhurst President and COO Bill Bennett.  “Local farmers and their dairies are critical to our success, and we believe in supporting 4-H and their vital work in our communities.”

For the fourth consecutive year at the Fryeburg Fair, Maine's largest, Oakhurst had a presence in the fair's milking parlor and transported the milk from the cows milked at the fairgrounds to its plant in Portland.  “The milking parlor is a chance for people to see up close where their milk comes from,” noted Bennett, “and we always enjoy displaying our vintage delivery truck and our antique horse-drawn milk wagon.  Our milk has been a part of Maine life for a long time!”
